CHAPTER

NINETEEN

The ride back was tense, but only for Cade and me.

Everyone else on the bus was still bursting with giddy enthusiasm, sharing their favorite parts of the evening, and comparing which items they had purchased to take home with them.

Words like life-altering and orgasmic circulated, and I tried my best not to throw up.

This man wasn’t a god, he was a cult leader, and these freaks were lining up for their branded cups of Kool-Aid.

Cade must have read the mounting anger on my face, because once again he rested his hand on my leg, and once again it dulled my rage to a manageable annoyance.

I wasn’t hungry when we arrived back in Bandera, but Cade insisted we get something to eat. The spectacle had been draining, and I suspect he knew I was always in a better mood after I’d eaten something.

I didn’t think food was going to cheer me up, but nevertheless we found ourselves back at The Golden Dragon. Brooke was there, looking as bored and unaffected as before, though her emotionless front slipped slightly when she saw us enter.

“Twice in one day?” She picked up two menus and gestured to the mostly empty restaurant. “Pick your poison, friends.”

Only two other tables were occupied, one by a young couple who appeared to be on a date, and judging by their awkward smiles and stolen glances, it might have been a first date. The other table had a family of four, two dads and two little boys, passing plates between them and laughing at a shared joke we hadn’t heard.

Cade and I sat at the same table we’d occupied over lunch, and without asking, Brooke brought me a can of Diet Coke and a glass of ice and set a pot of green tea in front of Cade. “Go easy on that,” she warned him. “Green tea is loaded with caffeine.” She smirked for the first time since we’d met her, and wandered back to the front of the restaurant to sit on her stool. She had a novel tucked in with the menus, so as soon as she was sure we were all sitting comfortably, she pulled it out and started to read.

I flipped over my placemat to the plain white backside and rifled around in my bag for a pen. Cade was reading the menu but watching me cautiously over the top of the bright red leather folio. As I began to scribble on the white paper, he set the menu down and gave me a quizzical look, eyes moving from my face to the paper. I watched him watching me, but my focus was mainly for my notes.

Power of manipulation.

Mind control.

Persuasion.

Charisma?

Visual manipulations?

“Visual manipulations?” he asked.

“I can’t decide how much of what we saw in there was special effects and how much he was actually controlling. I know he’s not a Rain Chaser, that’s obvious enough, but everyone around us believed what they were seeing. Some of that might have been from his powers. I’m just covering my bases.
